Sample door hardware sets
This is what our deliverable looks like: hardware sets written item by item, with the code reasoning behind each choice. The project is a hypothetical two-story office building. Real sets name a basis-of-design manufacturer and model for each item; those are left out here.
Hardware set 1
Main entrance pair, access controlled
Openings: 101 (pair, aluminum storefront, exterior)
| Qty | Item | Description | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Continuous hinges | Geared aluminum, full height | Clear anodized |
| 1 | Exit device | Rim device, electric latch retraction, active leaf | 626 |
| 1 | Exit device | Rim device, dummy trim, inactive leaf (removable mullion) | 626 |
| 1 | Removable mullion | Keyed removable mullion | Prime coat |
| 2 | Pulls | Offset door pulls | 630 |
| 2 | Closers | Parallel arm, heavy duty | 689 |
| 1 | Power transfer | Concealed electric power transfer | |
| 1 | Threshold | Saddle threshold, 1/2 in. max height | Mill aluminum |
| 2 | Door sweeps | Brush sweep | Clear |
| 1 | Card reader | By access control contractor |
Why this set
- An office (Group B) entrance does not require panic hardware, but exit devices are the usual choice on a busy main entrance. They become required if the space is an assembly or educational occupancy with 50 or more occupants.
- Electric latch retraction lets the card reader unlatch the door for entry, while the bar still opens it mechanically from inside.
- A removable mullion lets each leaf latch on its own without an overlapping astragal.
- Threshold held to 1/2 in. for the accessible route.
Hardware set 2
Stair door, 90 minute
Openings: 110A, 210A (single, hollow metal, labeled)
| Qty | Item | Description | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Hinges | Steel ball bearing, 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 | 652 |
| 1 | Fire exit hardware | Rim device, no dogging, labeled | 626 |
| 1 | Closer | Parallel arm, sized for the door | 689 |
| 1 | Magnetic holder | Wall mounted, releases on fire alarm | 689 |
| 1 | Kick plate | 10 in. high | 630 |
| 1 | Gasketing | Smoke seal at head and jambs |
Why this set
- Rated door: self-closing and positive latching, with listed fire exit hardware that cannot be dogged open.
- Held open only by a magnetic holder tied to the fire alarm, never by a mechanical hold-open.
- Kick plate kept under 16 in. so it needs no separate label.
- Gasketing replaces silencers on this frame.
Hardware set 4
Private office
Openings: 105, 106, 107 (single, wood door, hollow metal frame)
| Qty | Item | Description | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Hinges | Ball bearing, 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 | 652 |
| 1 | Lockset | Mortise lock, Grade 1, office function, lever trim | 626 |
| 1 | Wall stop | Concave wall bumper | 630 |
| 3 | Silencers | Rubber, strike jamb |
Why this set
- Office function: the outside lever is locked by a turn or button inside or by key outside, and the inside lever always opens the door.
- Lever trim meets the ADA rule for hardware operable without tight grasping or twisting.
- No closer needed on an unrated office door unless the owner standard calls for one.
Illustrative only; every project depends on its occupancy, adopted code edition and the listings of its rated assemblies. Finish 689 is BHMA aluminum painted, common on closers and holders. See door hardware sets and download the free schedule template.
