Door schedules: what columns to include and a template

By the Div08 Consulting team · Updated

A door schedule is the table on the drawings that lists every door by number with its size, door type, material, frame type, fire rating and hardware set. It ties the floor plans to spec sections 08 11 13 (hollow metal), 08 14 16 (wood doors) and 08 71 00 (door hardware), so every opening can be priced, ordered and installed correctly.

What a door schedule does

The floor plan shows where each door is and which way it swings. The door schedule says what each door is. Suppliers build their door, frame and hardware orders from it, and the hardware submittal is checked against it opening by opening. If the schedule is wrong or incomplete, the error flows into every order.

On most projects there are actually two linked schedules: the door schedule on the drawings and the hardware schedule (the hardware sets) in section 08 71 00. The hardware set column is the link between them.

Columns a door schedule should include

  • Door number (mark): usually the room number plus a letter, matching the plans
  • Location: from room to room, or the room name
  • Size: width, height and thickness (for example 3 ft 0 in. x 7 ft 0 in. x 1-3/4 in.)
  • Door type and material: a reference to a door elevation (flush, half lite, narrow lite) and the material (hollow metal, wood, aluminum)
  • Door finish: factory finish, field paint or stain
  • Frame type and material: a reference to a frame elevation and the frame material, with the frame profile where it varies
  • Details: head, jamb and sill detail references
  • Fire rating: the required label in minutes or hours, or blank for non-rated
  • Hand or swing: optional, but it prevents a lot of errors (see door handing)
  • Hardware set: the set number from 08 71 00
  • Remarks: electrified hardware, card reader, smoke gasketing, sound rating, undercut for transfer air and anything else unusual

Spec tip

add a column for frame depth (or wall type) when the project has more than one wall thickness. A hollow metal frame ordered at the wrong depth is a long lead time reorder.

Checks before you issue the schedule

  • Every door on the plans appears once in the schedule, and every scheduled door exists on the plans.
  • Every opening in a rated wall has a rating, and every rated opening uses a hardware set with a closer and positive latching. See fire-rated doors.
  • Pairs are scheduled as pairs, with sets that include the right flush bolts, astragal and coordinator.
  • Openings with card readers match the security drawings and use electrified hardware sets.
  • Clear widths work for accessibility: a 3 ft 0 in. door normally gives the required 32 in. clear. See ADA door requirements.
  • Undercuts, transfer air and sound requirements are noted where the mechanical or acoustic design depends on them. See door undercut.

If you would rather hand the schedule off, our hardware schedules service builds or checks the door schedule and hardware sets together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a door schedule and a hardware schedule?

The door schedule lists each opening with its door, frame, rating and set number. The hardware schedule lists what is in each hardware set. The set number connects the two.

Who prepares the door schedule?

The architect, as part of the construction drawings. A hardware consultant or supplier usually prepares the hardware schedule, either in the spec or in the submittal.

Should the door schedule show handing?

It is not always required because the plans show the swing, but adding a hand column catches errors early and makes the hardware submittal easier to check.

General guidance only. Code requirements depend on the edition your jurisdiction has adopted and on the listing of each fire-rated assembly; confirm with the authority having jurisdiction. Published by Div08 Consulting (John Voll, owner).
